Good Samaritan Award Presentation Guidelines

The Presentation

We recommend the nearest Sunday morning worship service that features strong participation by the youth of the church. Such as Children's Day, United Christian Youth, Scout Sunday, special junior choir presentation, etc.

The Senior Pastor and recipient are encouraged to invite all interested parties. A news release prior to the presentation is appropriate.

Letters from the district superintendent, bishop and the executives of any youth-serving agency should be solicited and time permitting, read at the presentation. Flowers honoring the recipient may be sponsored by the church, the recipient's parents or the group in which they are participants.

The Ceremony

The Pastor invites pre-arranged escorts of church leaders, youth leaders, scout leaders (whoever is appropriate) to bring forward the recipient and their parents. The recipient is instructed to remain seated until the escorts actually tell them to rise.

The Pastor moves to the center and lays upon the floor a piece of material 8" x 20" of the same color as the recognition ribbon. He steps back and introduces the recipient and parents. The pastor or his appointee reads a brief summary of the recipient's "significant" Christian Service Leadership. The recipient, parents and escort form up two paces from and facing the cloth on the floor. (Escorts to the outside so as to prevent obstruction of the viewer.) The pastor or his appointee (possibly a former recipient) briefly explains the Good Samaritan Recognition.

The pastor may then say the recipient's "name" and "Please come forward and pick up this symbol." (Acolyte may, as the recipient kneels on one knee to pick up the cloth, light a special candle.) The recipient hesitates to the slow count of three on one knee, picks up the cloth, then rises facing the pastor with the cloth held by both hands in front.

The pastor may then say, "As you stooped in service to God's creation to help mankind, you rise to receive the Good Samaritan. We rejoice as your light shines (as this lighted candle signifies) as a beacon to all would-be servants of Christ. You have done much good and in as much you have brought honor to Christ, this church, your family and the community and those to whom you ministered. We are privileged today to bestow upon you the Good Samaritan."

(Pastor hangs medallion about neck, hands presentation box to recipient. Reads the certificate. Have key letters of congratulations read (optional). Then the pastor dismissed the group back to their places by saying, "May God bless you, your parents, and all those who, like you, aspire to Christian ministry and leadership. Again, congratulations." With handshake - you may be seated.

Have the lay leader sit down front and lead a standing ovation.
