Daily Devotional Messages for Those in Service of Others
November 11, 2002
Dear Friend:
In 1942, shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Christian leaders across the nation participated in the preparation of a book of daily devotions. That book,
Strength for Service to God and Country, helped young men through the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Years later, Korean War soldiers read the book with frozen fingers in the winter months of the early 1950s.
That historic book has now been republished with additional devotions by current religious leaders. We hope to send as many as 1,000,000 copies to every man and woman now serving in the U.S. armed services. We invite you to part of that adventure.
James E. Townsend, a retired chaplain and colonel in the U.S. Air Force, underscores the importance of this endeavor. In 1968 while serving at the Danang Air Force Base, Townsend said a hospital on that base received as many as 500 casualties a week. "We worked hard to provide spiritual support both to our local troops and to the flow of casualties moving through our hospital," says Townsend. "Two things we desperately needed in our ministry were pocket-sized scriptures and pocket-sized devotional materials. We had neither during my tour."
We hope that you will consider making a gift of $25, $50, $100 or more this Christmas Season as we distribute these little devotional books to military personnel serving on the front lines. As we raise funds, we are able to print and distribute books.
Also, please find an order form enclosed that will tell you more about the book and will provide a way for you to order copies for yourself and perhaps for firefighters, police officers or other emergency personnel serving in your area.
Thank you in advance for your investment in the spiritual lives of our nation's public and military personnel who so bravely protect us and keep us safe everyday.
Yours in Christ,
